Graduate Admissions Information

REQUIREMENTS
A bachelor's degree, or its equivalent, from a recognized institution of higher education is required. Admission is competitive; only 5-8 PhD and 5-8 MS students are accepted per year. An average of B or better in previous academic work is required. This program also requires three letters of recommendation and excellent scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE’s). (The program average for the last three years is 580 Verbal, 750 Quantitative, 4.5 Analytical Writing). Additional evidence of potential for excellence in research as demonstrated by previous research experience is highly desirable. Whenever possible, qualified students are offered the opportunity to visit.

APPLICATIONS
Admission information is available from the Office of Graduate and Professional Admissions at Rutgers University, 18 Bishop Place, New Brunswick, NJ 08901 (732/932-7711) or via the UMDNJ Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences website. A complete application consists of the application form, letters of recommendations, the application fee, official transcripts of previous academic work, personal statement or essay which addresses the reasons for the student's interest in graduate study, and test scores. Apply online for Biomedical Engineering at Rutgers here: http://gradstudy.rutgers.edu/. Women and minority students are particularly encouraged to apply.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT
It is the policy of the Graduate Program in Biomedical Engineering to provide full financial support, including stipend and tuition remission, to all matriculated PhD students for the duration of their graduate careers. Students without the necessary background or whose academic records are deficient are sometimes offered conditional admission without financial support until the initial conditions are met. After the first year, financial support is contingent on making satisfactory progress towards the Ph.D. degree. The BME PhD student stipend for Fall 2008 is $26,500 per year plus tuition and health insurance.

DEADLINES
(PhD)
ALL PhD applications MUST be received by January 15 for consideration. Supporting material must be received shortly thereafter.  Fellowships are generally awarded at the time of offer of admission for the first year. International students applying from abroad must submit ALL application supporting material by February 1st.  Early
submission is strongly encouraged for all applicants.

(MS)
ALL MS applications and supporting material MUST be received by February 1
for first consideration.  There is no departmental funding for incoming
masters students.  Funding must be handled by the applicant.

FOREIGN APPLICANTS
Foreign applicants are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) if English is not their native language. For further test information, write to TOEFL, Educational Testing Service, P.O. Box 6151, Princeton, NJ 08541, U.S.A. Satisfactory English proficiency is a prerequisite for graduate study at the university, and a minimum TOEFL score is expected for admission into the Graduate Program in Biomedical Engineering. In addition, those whose native language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in oral communication. Applicants of questionable English proficiency will be required to take a test upon arrival at the university and may have to take course work in English as a Second Language (ESL).
